Synopsis
With the Olympics around the corner, this is the touching distance.
We hit the slopes at LAAX with Emily Rothney, a 17-year old snowboarder from the Scottish highlands who rides for Team GB. We discover her story in snowsports and learn about the challenges both physically and financially when competing in this high risk sport - and the real threat injury poses to a career.
From the Editor...
I met with Craig first. I'd driven over 6 hours almost non-stop to the Scottish Highlands. When I arrived, darkness was descending as I drove off the beaten track towards his caravan. Due to the weather his circuitry had shorted, and he had no power. I'd never met Craig before, but we spent two hours in his caravan filming his interview. I'd check into my hotel nearby, and then meet with Emily and her Mum Kerrie at their home about 10 miles up the road. They offered me breakfast, and after filming their interviews they made me soup. Lovely people. Before heading home, I made sure to film some of the mountain ranges and Loch Ness. I've never been this far north in the UK before.
In the edit, I had a great time. There was a lot of footage to condense into a 20-minute episode, but we got there. With thanks to Blume for kindly providing footage of Emily captured on the snow in LAAX. Hoping to see her back on the slopes again soon.
